The Canon Extender EF 1.4X III is a high-performance teleconverter designed for select Canon EF-mount L-series lenses, extending their focal length by 1.4× while maintaining exceptional image quality. Ideal for wildlife, nature, sports, and photojournalism, it enables photographers to get closer to distant subjects without carrying heavier telephoto lenses.

The extender features seven optical elements in three groups, all with Canon’s Super Spectra coating to reduce ghosting and flare, and Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for easier cleaning. An integrated processor ensures accurate communication between lens and camera for reliable autofocus, metering, and ID information, producing well-balanced, precise images. Built to withstand tough environments, the Extender EF 1.4X III is dust- and water-resistant and includes a carefully positioned lens release mechanism for quick mounting and minimal exposure to the elements.

  • Increases lens focal length by 1.4× while maintaining optical quality
  • Super Spectra and Fluorine coatings reduce flare, ghosting, and smudges

this is a great combination with 100-400 IS II USM lens when some extra reach is needed.

Nice to have when you need reach

I recently swapped out my version 2 converter for the version 3 unit. I use it in combination with two lenses, the 500 f4 MK1 and the 100 - 400 MK2 mostly on my 7D2. The most noticeable improvement in image quality has been with the 100-400 lens not that the previous generation performed poorly.

AF speed does suffer, particularly on the 100-400 and obviously the 100-400 goes to f8 at 400. Note, some older generation Canon cameras will not autofocus at f8, e.g. the 60D.

Awesome piece of equipment

I used my 1.4 mk3 converter with my 7D mk1 camera and 300 f4 IS lens and also on my 7D mk2 camera and 400 f4 DO lens. I almost never take it off. I have not seen much (if any) image quality drop when using this converter.
